Volcom Stone's Wild In The Parks Championships 2013

Volcom’s 2013 Wild in the Parks tour came to a climactic end at the company’s headquarters Saturday, October 19, 2013!

The 2013 series has scoured the globe to find the best young prospects that skateboarding has to offer.  After six months and 11 tour stops, more then 140 highly talented competitors made their way to Costa Mesa, California in pursuit of Volcom’s $15,000 cash purse and the title of 2013 ‘WITP’ champion. With the stage set, the action was underway!

A packed crowd of professional skateboarders, industry heavyweights, and skateboarding enthusiasts set the scene, as the 14 & Under Division got down to business. Alex Midler was a force to be reckoned with as he destroyed everything in his path with technical perfection.  Alex landed both bs and fs 270 lips on the handrail in zone 1, kickflip bs lip from the euro gap to rail in zone 3, nollie fs feeble on the rainbow rail in zone 2, and many more throughout.  If that wasn’t enough to claim 1st, Alex secured the win by landing a buzzer-beating bs 270 kickflip lipslide on the handrail as the crowd erupted in disbelief.  Tanner Oliver was right behind Alex impressing the judges with a clean bs smith bs 180 out on the zone 2 rainbow rail, bs kickflip over the euro gap to flat in zone 3, and finished things out with a redeeming bs tail shuv out on the zone 1 hubba to lock down 2nd place.   Gilbert Estrada rounded out the top 3 by ripping a sw 360 flip down the stair set in zone 1, a bs bigger flip up the zone 3 euro, and put down a crowd-wowing hardflip late fs 180 on the zone 2 pyramid. These young guns all displayed why skateboarding has a bright future.

The 15 & Over Division was next to attack the zones like a wolf stalking a lone sheep that had lost its herd.  Mason Coletti made his presence known immediately by landing 5 heavy tricks that traversed all 3 zones in less than a minute.  This was extra impressive since Mason had recently recovered from a broken kneecap that left him sidelined for over 6 weeks. Mason pulled many noteworthy tricks including an impossible lipslide on the zone 2 rainbow rail, alley oop fs 180 sw bs crook on the hubba in zone 1, and a gnarly kickflip fs 50-50 from bank to rail in zone 3 for the win.  Tanner Van Vark didn’t waste any time getting the juices flowing before putting on a show.  He stomped out a hardflip across the pyramid in zone 2, a fakie ollie sw bs crooked to regs on the hubba in zone 1, and finished his performance with a perfect lipslide transfer into the jersey barrier in zone 3. His performance was very impressive as he secured the 2nd place position.  Nathan Hammond also mixed it up as he blasted a powerful bs kickflip over the down rail in zone 1, a fakie full cab down the stairs, and hammered out a huge ollie late fs shuv down the euro gap to flat. Nathan proved that you “don’t mess with Texas” and placed 3rd as time expired.

The Open Division was now ready to finish things off as a full moon cast its rays onto the skatepark from above. Dashawn Jordan dropped the gloves immediately by landing a bs bigger flip over the euro gap to flat in zone 3, a hard flip fs board on the zone 1 handrail, a next try bs bigger flip fs board on the handrail, a huge fakie fs kickflip over the hip in zone 2, and many more to take the title of 2013 WITP Open Division Champion! Tyson Bowerbank was trading punches with Dashawn the entire way.  Tyson rattled off many technical tricks including a kickflip fs nosegrind pop out off the creeper ledge in zone 3, a fs 360 kickflip over the hip in zone 2, and a perfect over the bolts bs 360 bigflip down the stairset in zone 1 for a well deserved 2nd place finish.  Chris Gregson was next to show his presence by stepping into the ring. Chris is always a crowd favorite by skating fast and destroying everything in his path.  He laid down a stylish bs noseblunt to fakie on the jersey barrier in zone 3, blasted a 15 stair-sized fs flip down the 7 stair in zone 1, and capped it all off with  a massive fs 360 across the pyramid in zone 2. Chris performed very well and took home the bronze podium position.  These guys truly raised the level of skateboarding and set the bar even higher than expected.

Kelly Slater Takes Win Over John John Florence at Teahupo'o!
Kelly Slater returns to perfect form on the Championship Tour with a win over one of the world's best barrel riders, John John Florence, in flawless conditions at Teahupo'o, Tahiti. It's been two years since the king has claimed a victory on the World Surf League, and even longer since he's proved to be unbeatable throughout an entire event. With such an absence (for Kelly) in between CT wins, people have speculated if the 11-time world champ will ever win another world title, and if his unremarkable 20+ run on tour is finally coming to a close. With a world tour ranking outside of the top 10 coming into Teahupo'o for the first time in his career, and a surgence of younger and thought-to-be more heavily agile surfers now on tour like Filipe Toledo, John John Florence and Gabriel Medina, questions have rose of Kelly's ability to compete with the best in the world in 2016. But Kelly is at the top of his health and nutrition game, agile as ever, and with this win, shows us no signs of slowing down. We may just see a return of the great in the near future. A swing in the tide if you will. Whether or not Kelly goes on to win another CT event or world title, he's still the king, and still ruling the upper-class of professional surfing in 2016. I mean, who other than Kelly Slater can pull off rides like this at one of the heaviest waves in the world... This event marked his 55th CT win and fifth win at Teahupo'o, but that's not all. Along the way, Kelly bagged four perfect 10s, a perfect heat score (third of his career, ninth in pro surfing history), and for the first time ever he was awarded the prestigious Andy Irons Commitment Award (A.I. Award), which is given to the most committed surfer during the Teahupo'o event. Kelly has a rich and personally competitive history with Andy where they intensely rivaled each other like no other pair in surfing, or arguably, sports history. In fact, the last heat Kelly ever had with Andy was in the semifinals of this same event in 2010, where Andy would go on to hoist the trophy, so having Kelly win the A.I. Award and the event this year, was truly emotional for everyone. "I was channeling Andy this week. I was thinking about him a lot. A lot of emotions." -Kelly Kelly and the three time world champ Andy Irons had one of the most competitive and heated rivalries in sport's history, fighting for world titles while pushing the sport into a higher realm of professional competition. Listen below to Kelly on his rivalry w/ Andy Irons (skip to 1min 52s): With this win, it pushes Kelly into eighth place on WSL's Championship Tour, but he has a long way to go if he wants to clinch the 2016 world title: "I’m too far out of it now, but I’ll try and play the role of spoiler a few times if I can. I want to keep winning heats, and maybe if I win another event or two, we can have that conversation." A Candid Photo Journal: Welcome To Water Ep. 3 - Indonesia
A couple months ago, filmmaker / photographer Scott Stinnett ventured with some of the boys on the Volcom Surf Team to South East Asia to a little place called Sumbawa, located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain. Sumbawa, a highly sought-after surf destination for people all around the world, offers many heavy world-class barrels, prodominately lefts, accompanied with a shallow coral reef bottom. For the traveling surfers and cameramen like Scott, Sumbawa is a great place to journey to for a variety of waves and tons of land exploring. Their mission? Shoot some clips of Balaram Stack, Parker Coffin, Imai Devault and Noah Schweizer for a surf edit (watch here), venture to a few remote areas for some lifestyle photography, have some fun, and live to tell their story. Conclusion: they lived, but their story wasn't as exciting as today's current news in the world, so we didn't write a story. Although, Scott was able to capture some memorable moments from the trip through the use of his Yashica T4 and Wide Lux Panoramic cameras which we just had to share. Take a peek at some of the photos below! PHOTOS: Scott Stinnett, @melllow_yellow CAMERAS: Weatherproof Yashica T4 35mm Point and Shoot, Wide Lux Panoramic Camera Fadi, pronounced "Faw-Dee," was the crew's epic tour guide and drove them around to some mystical secret locations The boys were stoked when Fadi showed them this secret hideaway in the forest This spot wasn't surfable, but Parker Coffin didn't want to leave 100 degree weather, fully clothed, with an old Volcom tee wrapped his head. Score! In the background you can see a pretty sick left, which unfortunately, wasn't surfable, so the boys moved on to another location The gateway to the dream left that was scored in the edit. The crew ended up calling that wave "Baldman's" for a local incorrectly pronouncing Balaram's name. Once you walk through that path you are rewarded with this sight. The granny farmer, who owns that piece of land, is shown here holding the gate open for the crew. Imai Devault at Baldman's Imai with the first leap into an unknown lagoon Taking a break from the road This desolate, beachy farm land makes for a good photo The boys' first look at Baldman's A small Indonesian girl on her way to pre-school. It's fascinating traveling thousands of miles away from home to see how native people live and grow up, hugely disconnected from the world you and I live in today. Noah and Parker, full zen mode The Nomad Resort The heat made Parker a little thirsty... Here's Fadi (on the right) wondering what a kid from Florida and a kid from California are doing staring off into the depths of a lagoon On the way to the waterfall. Beautiful scenery in every corner of Sumbawa kept traveling from place-to-place a treat rather than a burden. The long walk back from Yo-Yos (the smaller, fun-looking right from the edit) The boys watching Balaram swing from a tree into the water. Balaram, with a miscalculated attempt to fear of landing on tree roots (shown on the left), hung onto the rope and slammed back into the tree. Nice one, Balaram. On the way out from granny farmer's crops and into Baldman's Rocks were slippery, but careful foot placement ensured no one fell off the cliff. Too bad. Would've made for a cool photo. Imai

On the Road with Hinds
Our newest campaign is a dreamy, fun filled escape into the unknown featuring our favorite girl band at the moment, Hinds! The members of Hinds are Ana Perrote (vocals, guitar), Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Amber Grimbergen (drums) and Ade Martin (bass).
