RESULTS | Stop #6 of Volcom PBRJ European Tour 2014 | Kitzsteinhorn, Austria

What a day! Last weekend, the PBRJ Austria went down at the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun. Despite a shitty weather forecast, predicting heavy winds from midday onwards, the event was sun-drenched and only later on, as the tents were already packed, the wind kicked in.

Volcom is a proud sponsor of the Kitzsteinhorn snowparks and this partnership allowed this years PBRJ to feature one of the most remarkable set ups.

2DWX_5900Volcom_PBRJ2014_Austria

With a steep and fast “in run” riders had the choice whether to go straight on the stair set to hit the double kinked rail or make use of the two elbow rails positioned to the shoulders of the stair set.

The riders could also just gap the first part of the elbow either straight onto the barrel or the down rail.

The park also pulled a preregistration liftpass small price, 10€ only for the day on the hill! At the end of the day, many shred heads from all over Europe found their way to the glacier in order to rocket launch their tricks down the set.

With a moderate participation in the under 15 category the decision was made that Martin Kikas deserves the first place, for Martin showed some serious commitment and rode almost every obstacle to the fullest. In the category 16-21 the Austrian Nitro Team Rider Dominik Sobe got his tricks together in the most fashionable way and therefore landed safe and sound on the first place. During the girls heat, judges were involuntarily bluffing their cheeks as the girls recklessly sticked their tricks on the double kinked rail. Sabrina Burnham from the Uk presented the most constant riding/best tricks and thus stepped in front when the first place was announced.

The open division boosted the most riders by far and therefore two qualification heats were hold. All riders were highly motivated to give the judges a proper eyeball massage. Especially a small group of Dutch/Belgian riders emerged from their Snowhall breeding grounds in the lowlands and keenly waxed the rails with their boards. But also the local riders brought their bag of tricks to the PBRJ Austria and happily unfolded the treasures they had collected during their laps at the glacier. However, in the end no one else but the German chap Chris Böhnke (Nitro) cleared the roughest tricks in every area, and therefore was supplied with 250€ and the first place in the Open Division, Big props to Chris comboing 2 PBRJ titles and a 4 th place this season. Dylan Norder, won the best performance of the day and will fly to Mammoth Mountain for the 2014 PBRJ Championships. Meneer Norder is a Dutch ripper with a bag full of creative tricks that blew away the judges, he didn’t win the event but got rewarded the trip to Mammoth mountain.

After a brief Monster “Cash For Tricks Session” at the double kinked rail, the happening was coming to end and the predicted winds finally picked up.

It was a great day for everyone and the whole organisation on location was going super smooth.

After the event, the riders were invited to join the premiere of the Volcom “True To This” Movie in the Greens XL in Zell am See, organized in cooperation with the local Snow & Skateshop La Resistance.

Week 19: The Oil Pans “Creepy Tales” | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 19: The Oil Pans - "Creepy Tales"   Grab the free download Born from the toxic runoff of Disneyland, The Oil Pans bring their foggy vibes to the Volcom studio for their first-ever recording of "Creepy Tales." "The concept behind The Oil Pans is that we're the sludge that collects in the oil,” says vocalist Squelch. "We're the discarded filth that slips through the cracks and stains the countless driveways and roadways. We're that imprint that never goes away." The Oil Pans formed in 2001. "We came together with the idea of playing bluesy, melancholic punk rock," says Squelch. Joining the frontman is guitarist Daniel Bush, bassist Marquies Kharinval, drummer Damian "Chocolate" Edwards, and organist Tony Santos. Together, these musicians have displayed a rigorous focus on live performance. "We have always been a theatrical band," explains Squelch. "Our hope is that the audience captures our presence with the absurd antics and leaves the venue with unanswered questions that may be fulfilled in times of turmoil and strife. Life is theatrics. We all play roles. The Oil Pans tend to portray the sadistic nature of everyday life through dense fog and shadow play." The relationship between Burger Records and The Oil Pans goes back to the mid-to-late '90s when Lee from Burger would hang out with the Four Letter Words. The Four Letter Words would play with The Noise which was Lee and Sean's band. Later, they would form The Make Out Party with Dan, and Burger would release their 1st 7-inch back in the primal stages of the record label. The lineage runs deeps between The Oil Pans and Burger Records. The Oil Pans conjure timeless dread on this song. "'Creepy Tales' is about war stories," Squelch tells us. "It's the way that men talk to each other with their over-inflated egos and far-fetched stories. It's the pounding of the chest, look-at-me scenario that rifles through the song." With this initial recording under their belts, The Oil Pans are primed for more recordings. According to Squelch, "The Oil Pans definitely want to go back into the recording studio with the intentions of releasing an EP or even a full-length LP." CJ Collins' first time to Spain for the La Kantera Pro
Cj Collins isn't your normal 14 year old boy. Not only does he absolutely rip on a skateboard, but he has more stamps in his passport than a most other kids his age. In June we took him to Getxo located in the Basque Country region of Spain for the 2017 La Kantera Pro. While he's been to Malmo, Sweden and Florianópolis, Brazil for the Vans Park Series, it was his first time to Spain and he was pretty excited. Before he hopped on a 14 hour flight to Bilbao, Spain he stopped by the Volcom HQ store to pick up some new clothes for the trip. CJ with a little wallride in the Volcom HQ store before picking up some clothes for his trip. Packing for his first time to Spain! Grabbing a drink at Volcom HQ in his new "Supply Stone" Pullover Hoodie In the Volcom HQ store CJ was really digging the 'Stone Supply' pullover hoodie, and a new pair of 'Frickin Modern' stretch chinos. Still with some time to kill before he had to head to the airport, he decided to hit the Volcom U.S. HQ skatepark for a quick sesh. CJ Collins dropping in, in his new Frickin Modern stretch chinos. CJ Stalefish at Volcom U.S. HQ With his bags packed and and passport in hand CJ hopped in the van and headed to the airport. The flight was delayed a half an hour but with the in the grand scheme of things what's another half an hour when you're waiting to get on a 14 hour flight? CJ taking his bags out of the van at the airport. Just waiting to get on the plane in the Lino Stone tee When he arrived in Bilbao, Spain he met up with the rest of the team including Grant Taylor, Collin Provost, Axel Cruysberghs, Omar Hassan and others at the airport as they were all flying in from various places at the same time. Once all together, the crew made it to the Moana Surf and Skate Hostel where they were staying. Complete with a mini ramp, little street course and all sorts of other stuff to get into, CJ was in heaven! After a solid nights rest the next day we headed down to La Kantera, an old skatepark with prime real estate on the beach where the contest was held, to get some practice in. The bowl the contest was in is more reminiscent of a backyard pool with a steep shallow end and 10 foot deep end. This made it a little difficult for the heavy hitters like Grant and Omar but for little CJ it was just his size. CJ wasted no time as he was frothing to skate, blasting airs in practice and figuring out his line for the contest. CJ blasting a stalefish in his 'Supply Stone' pullover hoodie The next day was the contest and CJ was put straight int the finals. While waiting for his heat him and Grant Taylor would stay warmed up on the old crusty halfpipe behind the stands. In his heats he would land trick after trick, really impressing the locals who've skated the bowl their entire life and the spectators who have never seen CJ skate in person. Every wall he would do a trick and the crowd would collectively wonder 'how did he just land that?!?' While the pros would blast huge airs and do difficult tricks, most of them had a hard time staying on their board for the entire time. The 'Frickin Modern' stretch chinos were basically made for boneless' like this! Stalefish in the deep end as the entire crowd watches. In the end CJ took home FIRST place! First time to Spain and skating the notoriously difficult La Kantera bowl, he came out on top! CJ was just as surprised as everyone else and the crew was extremely proud of our little guy. With CJ taking the top spot at the 2017 La Kantera Pro, everyone in the crew wanted to celebrate CJ's epic win, but how to you party with a 14 year old? While most of the crew enjoyed drinks by the beach with the rest of the skaters in the contest, CJ eventually made it back to the Hostel to rest up. Grant Taylor stoked for CJ after the contest! Next day we tried to get in the streets to hit some spots, but the rain wasn't letting that happen. Collin Provost was trying to explain '10% parties' to CJ, basically meaning that when you win a big contest prize you immediately spend 10% of the winnings celebrating. The question arose again of 'how do you celebrate with a 14 year old? Well if you're CJ Collins you spend it on a soccer ball to kick around with your bros, go souvenir bracelet shopping with Grant Taylor and of course, hit the arcade! First purchase with your contest winnings, a soccer ball! Just about 10 minutes later Grant accidentally kicked it to the water by where we were eating. (We eventually got it back though) Grant negotiating deals for souvenir bracelets for the entire crew. What better way to spend a rainy day then hitting the arcade with your buds. After some quality time at the Arcade we headed down to the beach for a mellow La Kantera Pro wrap party right next to the skatepark. With a decent amount of candy in his system, CJ had plenty of energy to spare so he played soccer with some of the locals on the beach for a few hours while the rest of the crew enjoyed drinks and food at the party. All that running on the sand got CJ tuckered out while the rain started to fall. By the end of the weekend it was unfortunately time to head home. Everyone flew out around the same time but still had plenty of time to kill in the airport while we waited. To pass the time CJ likes to draw in a sketchbook he carries around in his backpack. He likes to draw portraits of people and this was one of our video director Lannie Rhodes. Remy Stratton also pointed out that Grant Taylor used to do the same thing when he was that age too. CJ in the 'Base' tee with his portrait of Lannie while waiting for his flight home.

Week 18: Fatal Jamz "Heavenly Choir" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 18: Fatal Jamz - "Heavenly Choir"   Grab the free download Fatal Jamz formed during a busy summer for singer Marion Belle. "I formed the project in 2013 in the middle of recording a record with Dan Horne (The Lilys + Beachwood Sparks) and a bunch of my favorite L.A. players," he says. "I had a group going at the time called Bowery Beasts and this record we were recording was going to be our second full length. It came out as something very different and it went from there into Fatal Jamz." The newly christened Fatal Jamz received some positive attention early on with a single. "I started producing singles with my friend Nic and we dropped 'Rookie' on the bandcamp and it immediately got a lot of love online," recounts Marion. "From that one song we got asked to tour with Sky Ferreira and Smith Westerns." Burger Records and Gnar Tapes released the debut Fatal Jamz album, Vol. 1 in 2013. "I met Sean and Lee initially through my friends at Gnar and The Memories," recalled Marion. "They have been very supportive, setting up shows and DJ nights. They are really the first people to give the music a platform which I've always appreciated. It's been easy and cool to be apart of what Burger's been doing, which is obviously historic." "Heavenly Choir" is the first new Fatal Jamz song since releasing Coverboy in 2016 on Lollipop Records. If you are picking up a dark romantic vibe, you aren't misled. "In my songs I'm the lord of the dark garden of dreams," explains Marion. "I live for romance and the danger of love." "Heavenly Choir" may in fact signal the direction for future Fatal Jamz. "I wanted to write something very blood, red and gothic," says Marion. "It ended up being a new kind of anthem for us and maybe unlocking a new direction for the next record." Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 17: Part Time - "Que Vida"   Grab the free download Part Time was created by the band's mastermind, David Speck, in 2009. Already a veteran of bands in Austin and Oakland, David explains that Part Time was formed "simply by the grace of its substance." Since then, Part Time has released a string of full-length albums on several different labels starting with the 2009 self-titled release on Voice Academy Records, followed by two albums for Mexican Summer, What Would You Say? and PDA. They made their Burger Records debut in 2014 with Late Night with David Loca followed by Return To Cherry on Mother of Pearl. The last Part Time album, Virgos Maze, was released by Burger in 2015. "Burger Records is great," says David. "They believe in artists' dreams, which in turn realizes their own." Over the years, Part Time has seen several lineup changes. The "Regular Part Time Joes," as David describes it, "these days include: guitarist and keyboardist Billy Trujillo, bass barbarian Tony Leal, and our dear friend, the original atomic blonde on vocals, Kristin Caballero." Together, this group brings us a unique take on a '60s classic. As David puts it, "simply a silly punky / new wave cover of a song by Arthur Lee's 'Love' off of the Da Capo album.""
