Peaks to Point Breaks in Chile!

Chile is a centrifuge that sucks Northern Hemisphere riders down into it’s vortex every summer in search of powder. With spitting lefts thundering into sleepy fishing villages all along the coast, for those inclined to split their summer pleasures in between the white room and under the lip, it is an upside down mecca. Volcom riders Bryan Iguchi, Curtis Cisezk, Seth Huot, photographer Scott Sullivan, and myself spent two weeks testing Volcom’s new 2013/2014 outerwear immersed in the whirlpool, from peaks to pointbreaks.

Curtis has some kind of traveling beer sickness only curable by mid session napping and more beer. He is liberal with both remedies, though neither work well, and he ends up leaving early to go recover at a wedding in Las Vegas.

In the mountains Seth’s stoke is nothing less than infectious, but at the beach he grows restless. A man of the desert. Functioning also as the trip’s filmer, he finds Chile’s seaside locals not friendly with the thought of their waves ending up on foreign memory cards. And even from seemingly hidden angles in the cracking shelves that run through the rock walled points he is called out most of the times his camera is drawn.

Sullivan doesn’t leave home without his guitar, and in all our numerous travels together I most always end up carrying the damn thing for him through bus stations, train stations, airport terminals, and such because he has too much other shit to carry it himself. I hold it so awkwardly people cannot help but to validate their suspicions of a poser by asking if I play the instrument. When I point them to Scott fumbling with all his bags, he gives a cool cock of the head and I again shrink against my musical inadequacies. As always Scott provides a solid soundtrack to the journey, turning any opportunity to play with local musicians into a private concert.

The third time I’d found myself bound for Chile, I had anticipated my normal anxiety over leaving and extended my stay a week longer than planned before even leaving the States, as had Sullivan. With no new snow forecasted, we posted up near the beach and got barreled off our nuts. Thank you to our many friends in Chile who made the experience all the more radical with their presence, especially Nico Saric and Ariel Cifuentes. And to Volcom, for supporting the desire to wander.

Euro Thrash Video: Volcom Surf's European Vacation
Our good friends at Wasted Talent put together a video of some of our riders: Noa Deane, Ryan Burch, Gony Zubizarreta, and more, thrashing their way through Portugal, Spain, and France during their summer '17 European vacation. From scoring one of the best days of surf they've ever seen at The Cave, to touring the local watering holes and taverns, to getting caught up in a weird presidental campaign in Paris, there was no shortage of amusement and European debauchery. It was a great trip that surely lived up to its name: Euro Thrash. The team riders, photographers, and crew, all became great friends by the end of the trip and ended on a promise to all return back soon. Euro Thrash 2.0?

Leuven Skate Contest
The Leuven Family gathered once again for Leuven Skate Contest. Every year they have a new theme, this time they went all the way with JOHNNY’S & MARINAS. There wasn’t just a costume contest, beers and bbq. No, there was some skateboarding also. You’ve never seen a bowl and street contest this friendly and fun. Simon Deprez took the win with the Volcom best trick contest. Everybody killed it but one guy stood out, he protected his hometown and his title as biggest Johnny of them all, so Jonathan Thijs took the win. And there is no better Johnny prize than a Scooter. Once again, big thanks to the Leuven Family, Twits Skateshop and Volcom. See y’all next year. Credit Photo : Joselito Verschaeve
