Congrats Kelly Slater! 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro Champ!

The inhabitants of Namotu and Tavarua Islands were up and stirring before dawn this morning as it was pretty well known that a champion would be crowned later this day. The contest directors held off for a couple of hours to get past the high tide mark and then, at 9:15am Fiji Time, the first horn sounded and the 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro quarter-finals were underway at Cloudbreak.

To say the the quarter-final heats were stacked was simply stating the obvious as every remaining competitor had the potential to take out the rest and come out on top. John John Florence(HAW) would grab the first big score of the day with a trademark long barrel ride that would earn him a 9.1 score against the then world tour point-leader, Jordy Smith(ZAF). Jordy answered back with some of the best open face maneuvers of the contest yet his efforts were in vain as Florence hammered the proverbial nail in the coffin with a near perfect 9.93.

The next heat, where Sebastian Zietz(HAW) faced off agains Kelly Slater(USA), will surely go down in history. Kelly opened with a 10 point ride and Seabass was unable to answer back. Kelly would go on to score another 10 before the heat was even half over, earning him one of the few perfect 20-point two-wave scores in history.

Up next was Josh Kerr(AUS) vs. C.J. Hobgood(USA) who had to fight through a lull in the swell and lower scores in which C.J. squeaked out the win. After that we saw defending champ Joel Parkinson(AUS) go up against fellow Coolie kid Mick Fanning(AUS). The conditions were similar to the previous heat and fanning took the win by a mere three-tenths of a point.

…And then there were four. It had been about 2 years since Kelly Slater and John John Florence had faced each other in a one-on-one situation and the waves had turned back on just in time for their semi-final heat. Florence seemed uncharacteristically out of rhythm allowing Slater to annihilate just about every wave that came his way ultimately earning him the win. C.J. Hobgood seemed to have the next heat in the bag until Mick Fanning, needing an 8.7, came through at the last minute with a whopping 9.07.

After a short break it was time for the final round and it was as if the ocean knew that two titans were about to do battle, for the conditions at Cloudbreak just started going off! Mick started things off with a beautiful 9.2 ride directly followed by Kelly, arms wide open, on a macking poster-worthy barrel. Mick’s surfing was on point, but Kelly just seemed to be getting better and better throughout the heat with excitement levels so high that we even saw some rarely seen ‘claims’ from the eleven-time world champ. There was just no stopping Kelly Slater who finished out the final with a 19.8 score and the 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro Championship!

Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening - Different Stokes
Our friends over at The Berrics and The Skateboard Mag have also put together some rad edits showcasing some b-sides and alt-angles from Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening! The Berrics 'Different Stokes' edit above is a prime example. Barcelona was one of the last trips we went on to film for Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening and a good amount of the footage made it into the movie, but there was still some footage that just didn't make it. Below are a few more edits put together by The Skateboard Mag and The Berrics, stay tuned for more and don't forget to download your copy of Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening. Pooling Around is a segment on The Skateboard Mag that explores all the drained pits sprawled out along California. If you've seen the pool section in Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening then you know that we spent a great deal of time finding, cleaning and shredding these pools! This episode of 'Pooling Around' focuses on some of those missions. 'Across America' is another rad edit by The Skateboard Mag. Last summer we hopped on the road with our Wild in the Parks crew and followed them around America filming for Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening with one lucky skater from the contest that was chosen by Caswell Berry. We gathered a lot of footage during that summer and this edit highlights most of went down! Lastly, The Berrics remixed some of David Gonzalez's footage from the Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening. Be sure to check The Berrics and The Skateboard Mag for more coverage in the coming weeks!

Dustin Dollin - Behind the Scenes - Holy Stokes! Nightmare Skit
During the filming of Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening Dustin Dollin was battling a series of injuries and coming off filming for Vans' Propeller, so his body was in rough shape. Never to be the one to give up, Dustin still tried to film for Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening, but yet again the injuries kept stacking up. Just look at his attempts at kickflipping into the infamous carwash bank! He tried that multiple times, each time putting him out for a couple weeks. Somewhere along the line Dustin had this idea to film a 'Nightmare Skit' heavily influenced by the one from Peewee Hermans Big Adventure. With a star cast including Caswell Berry, Omar Hassan, Dane Burman, CJ Collins, Andrew Reynolds, Shane Heyl, Jamie Hart Gary Rogers and Brewce Martin. Filmed in the span of two long days in the Volcom HQ parking lot and skatepark we were all happy with the result. In celebration of Dustin Dollin's birthday today (June 26th) here are some photos from behind the scenes and don't forget to download your copy of Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening. Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening - New Zealand Trip
Back in April 2014 we took a trip down to New Zealand to visit our good friend and Kiwi skateboarding legend Lee Ralph with Grant Taylor, Daan van der Linden, Pedro Barros, Ben Raemers, Alain Goikoetxea, Omar Hassan, Rune Glifberg and Thrasher Magazine's Jake Phelps and their filmer P-Stone. We were also down there to film for Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening and turned out rather successful as there was enough footage to warrant an entire section to our New Zealand trip. Photos from this trip appeared in the October 2014 issue of Thrasher Magazine which you can READ HERE. In the mean time watch this 3 part 'Bru-Ray' series filmed and edited by P-Stone and download Holy Stokes! a Real Life Happening.
